A sustainable guide to a circular world

The plastics industry is facing a sustainable transformation. The recently published white paper “From #plasticfree to future-proof plastics” by Fraunhofer UMSICHT and the Dutch institute TNO shows how a future-proof, circular and sustainable plastics economy can be achieved.

Despite the increasing need to reduce plastic and use recyclable plastics sustainably, we can neither completely do without plastics nor continue to use them as before. Plastics are not only used as waste, but also in high-value applications such as food packaging, car parts and synthetic textiles.

The white paper from UMSICHT and TNO presents four strategic approaches that can help find the balance: narrowing the loop, operating the loop, slowing the loop and closing it of the cycle (closing the loop).

In addition, the two organizations are planning a practical platform for plastics in a circular economy - the European Circular Plastics Platform (CPP) - to address existing barriers and share promising solutions.
