Innovative medical research in Cologne

The Else Kröner-Fresenius Foundation (EKFS) has reaffirmed its support for clinical research in North Rhine-Westphalia by funding three Else Kröner Clinician Scientist Professorships with 1.1 million euros each. One of these coveted professorships goes to Dr. Philipp Schommers from the University Hospital of Cologne.

The project of Dr. Schommers focuses on optimizing monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) for the treatment of infectious diseases. Given the urgent need for new forms of therapy against a broad spectrum of viruses and bacteria, this project will make a significant contribution to the development and application of innovative treatment methods.

Funding from the EKFS offers doctors the opportunity to combine research and patient care and thus deepen their expertise in both clinical practice and medical research. This becomes particularly clear in the development of new, resistance-avoiding antibodies and their rapid use in clinical studies.

The professorships demonstrate the EKFS's commitment to promoting outstanding medical research in Germany. The selection of projects, based on a multi-stage process, underlines the high standards and importance of the research being funded. The other two award-winning projects, Perinatal Immunology in Heidelberg and Translational Precision Medicine of Chronic Lung Diseases in Hanover, complement the broad spectrum of research areas supported by the EKFS.
