5G and sustainability: A fascinating interplay

The digital transformation is in full swing and 5G technology plays a central role in it. A current survey by the Competence Center 5G.NRW examines the interaction between 5G and sustainability, which produces insightful and sometimes surprising results.

The survey participants see high innovation and sustainability potential in digitalization and especially in the use of 5G technology. Areas such as smart factories or transport and logistics could particularly benefit from this.

Despite the expected benefits, 5G's energy consumption remains a challenge. There are concerns that the efficiency gains achieved by 5G could lead to increased overall energy consumption.

The survey also highlights the importance of best practices to support companies in using digitalization processes for sustainable business. This makes it clear that the type of implementation is just as relevant as the technology itself.

The results of this survey are a valuable contribution to the ongoing discussion about the role of 5G in sustainable transformation.
