European Research & Innovation Days 2024

The 5th edition of the European Commission's “European Research and Innovation Days” 2024 took place in Brussels on March 20th and 21st. At the flagship event, representatives from politics, science, associations and companies met to discuss the future of research and innovation in Europe and to celebrate the successes since the start of the framework programs for research and innovation 40 years ago. The focus of the event was the question of how Europe can become more sustainable, fairer and more competitive through research and innovation.

What does it bring for NRW?

• Innovation and transformation financing needs to be further strengthened, especially with a view to the mix of top-down and bottom-up initiatives
• The new European Innovation Agenda aims to leverage the potential of deep tech innovations as part of the development of “Regional Innovation Valleys”; interregional innovation projects play an important role
• EU Missions for the Green Deal are of great relevance for NRW, especially with a view to “Climate Preparedness” for regions and cities as well as “Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities”
• The shift towards a green, competitive and net-zero economy requires fundamental structural changes and the use of breakthrough technologies, especially in energy-intensive industries such as steel, cement, chemicals and aluminum.
