NRW.innovativ visits the 9th “Cohesion Forum” of the European Commission

The 9th “Cohesion Forum” 2024 of the European Commission took place in Brussels on the 11th and 12th. The event brought together a wide range of actors from EU institutions, authorities from all Member States, social and economic partners, non-governmental organizations, universities and many more, who followed the debates online. The focus was on discussions on the role of European cohesion policy in times of profound changes in climate, technologies, demographics and geopolitical developments. In addition to the status quo and local best practices, the future of cohesion policy approaches was outlined.

Type of event: (online) conference

Date: 12/13 April

Organizer: European Commission

What's in it for NRW?

  • Cohesion policy is the European Union's central regional development instrument, which will continue to play a prominent role in reducing spatial disparities in the future.
  • It is to be expected that the design will continue to be largely in the hands of the regions (“location specificity”), which will give them better opportunities to control and target the green, digital and social transformation.
  • The EU is striving - if it has been handled seriously in the past - to reduce bureaucracy in the approval and allocation of funding, which will open up opportunities for NRW to implement infrastructure and funding measures more quickly.
  • Regions, especially those like NRW, which have many key industries and strong research and innovation capacities, are encouraged to use cohesion funds to be better prepared for future emergencies (resilience).
