The cities of Aachen and Münster showed the way

They are one of the seven initiative cities of the nationwide initiative “Livable cities through appropriate speeds” . That was in Summer 2021 - since then the initiative has grown considerably. The newly launched website www.lebenwerte-staedte.de at the end of March 2022. And from our conversations with our member municipalities, we know that other cities from our network would like to join.

The initiative advocates for municipalities to be given more freedom when deciding on the maximum speed to be set locally. Currently, Section 45 of the Road Traffic Act stipulates that the 30 km/h speed limit can only be ordered in the event of specific dangers or in front of social institutions such as daycare centers and schools. This does not take into account other positive effects of a 30 km/h speed limit, such as cleaner air, noise reduction and the general improvement in the quality of life. That is why the initiative also calls for a revision of the legal framework.
