PAPSTAR Solutions GmbH – disposable tableware without waste

Disposable and reusable do not have to be mutually exclusive. The PAPSTAR company from Kall in the Eifel produces disposable tableware and service packaging . The company has also been offering complete recycling concepts since 2019. Including converting the used tableware into a secondary raw material from which industrial cardboard is made.

The challenge

There are good reasons for disposable tableware. Security, for example. Cardboard cups do not break if they fall. No shards. So you can't hurt anyone. Hygiene is another important argument: If beer glasses are only briefly rinsed and reused countless times at events, this is not always hygienic. That's why it's difficult to imagine life without disposable tableware in places where a lot of people come together. On the other hand, there is no getting around the fact that a lot of disposable tableware is thrown away after a single use, which leads to a high consumption of resources and further increases the amount of waste. At PAPSTAR in Kall in the Eifel, a large provider of disposable tableware and service packaging active in many European countries, we are aware of this challenge. The company is looking for new alternatives and types of materials for its products. Renewable raw materials such as wood, sugar cane, palm leaves, corn starch and agricultural residues have long been used in production. With the founding of PAPSTAR Solutions GmbH in 2019, the North Rhine-Westphalia company also set out on the path to a circular economy. “We have set ourselves the goal of creating circular solutions for our products and making them available to our customers,” says Frank Kolvenbach, Managing Director of PAPSTAR Solutions GmbH. “We are pushing our sustainable focus and accompanying the entire life cycle of our products in order to give them a second life after use.”

“The increasing demand for environmentally friendly recycling solutions proves us right.”

The innovation

At the center of PAPSTAR Solutions' efforts are complete recycling concepts. For example, the company has exclusive sales rights for bio-converters, in which patented microbes are used under constantly optimal temperature and circulation conditions. When mixed with organic waste, these bacteria ensure that the waste does not rot but is transformed into a new valuable material in a processing process. This results in a significant reduction in volume and hygiene. This makes sustainable catering at events possible, for example, without creating waste from dishes and cutlery. Because PAPSTAR Solutions coordinates all services: the company not only supplies the disposable tableware, but also provides collection containers and a communication concept. The event waste is then ideally collected separately into residual waste and products made from renewable raw materials. The recyclable materials end up in a bio-converter and are processed using the process outlined. The result is a fibrous secondary raw material with a high cellulose content. This is then processed into cardboard, which is used in industry. “This future-relevant business area around closed recycling loops is becoming increasingly important for us,” says Kolvenbach, “and the increasing demand for environmentally friendly recycling solutions proves us right.”

The NRW effect

2 Innovation Prize Region Aachen 2023 for its sustainable overall concept “Zero Waste” for catering dishes and cutlery at events The patron of the award ceremony was NRW Economics Minister Mona Neubaur. “The global sustainability goals, the so-called 'SDGs', mark the central global challenges of our time,” said the jury chairman, District Administrator Stephan Pusch, in his laudatory speech. Actively addressing these is the task of all social actors – and therefore also the task of companies. “PAPSTAR Solutions GmbH is an outstanding example of the pursuit of these goals and, with its innovative concept, a worthy innovation award winner in 2023.” The company from Kall was also able to win the IHK Aachen Sustainability Award, which was awarded for the first time in 2023. Further awards are certainly possible, as the innovation and transformation activity at PAPSTAR is expected to increase. North Rhine-Westphalia is proving to be a very good business location. “Collaborations with universities such as RWTH Aachen or Forschungszentrum Jülich as well as other institutions and associations are crucial,” emphasizes Kolvenbach, “in order to promote innovations, impart practical knowledge and build a bridge between theoretical research and practical application.”
