marantec group – Mastering the transformation together

The Marantec Group from Marienfeld has been developing and producing drive and control systems for gates since 1990. In order to manage the transformation, the company wants to transform from a “hidden champion” to an “open champion” and develop innovations together with other companies and organizations.

The challenge

German medium-sized businesses are seen as role models worldwide. In North Rhine-Westphalia, too, many medium-sized companies shape the business location, including numerous so-called “hidden champions”. Companies that are world market leaders in their segment, but at the same time are relatively unknown and often located away from major cities. The Marantec Group, based in Marienfeld in East Westphalia, is also one of the “hidden champions”. With around 600 employees at eight production sites and eight sales branches worldwide, the group of companies is active in more than 70 countries. She specializes in drive and control systems. Business is going well, but at the same time the challenges are massive. Above all, global competition, digitalization and the imperative of sustainability create immense pressure for change. “We are convinced that we can no longer solve the challenges we face as a single medium-sized company alone,” says Kerstin Hochmüller, CEO at Marantec. Compared to corporations and entire economic systems from Asia and the USA, Marantec, as a medium-sized company, does not have all the necessary skills and capacities that it needs to implement innovative ideas. Nor about the financial resources that are necessary for this.

The innovation

“That’s why we have to network,” say Hochmüller and her co-CEO Andreas Schiemann. “Our future lies in cooperating with other companies, organizations and people.” Based on this conviction, the company has set itself the goal of nothing less than transforming itself into an “open champion”. This includes, for example, making innovations that have already been developed usable for your own company instead of reinventing them. Or: strengthening your own production operations by having Marantec produce components that are also interesting for other companies and industries. Marantec also wants to learn from others and at the same time make others strong so that we can offer customers more value together. And: “We want to offer our technical solutions and ideas to others,” emphasizes Hochmüller. The group of companies has even developed a symbol and a methodology for the change; the keyword is “Open Champion”. “In many areas this is a radical departure from learned structures and hierarchies,” explains the CEO. This also applies to corporate management. “Everyone is important and at the same time a part of the whole,” she is convinced. So that everyone at Marantec can do their job well, the company ensures the right equipment, processes and coordination. It is also about the will to constantly question what is being done today and how it is done, whether it is still right or can be solved differently. “This brings us to the fundamental will for change and self-determined action,” says Hochmüller. If all of this comes together, the company will become much faster, more agile and more innovative. And I can also devote myself to such large and comprehensive tasks as the introduction of a circular economy. “This is one of our most important goals,” announces the managing director, “but this also requires strong partners who are willing to learn.”

The NRW effect

When it comes to partnerships and collaborations, NRW is a good location for the group of companies. “Networks are extremely important for our path,” emphasizes Hochmüller, “and here in North Rhine-Westphalia and especially in East Westphalia we are extremely well networked.” Marantec maintains close contacts, for example, with the Bielefeld campus of the medium-sized technical college and with Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences, but also the whole in the west, to RWTH Aachen. Marantec also maintains close contacts within the “owl maschinenbau” network, which bundles diverse competencies and promotes its collective innovative strength. The medium-sized group also cooperates with the Founders Foundation in Bielefeld, which trains founders. And last but not least, with its “Open Champion” initiative, it offers a network and invites people to collaborate in Ostwestfalen-Lippe and beyond. “So that there is more momentum for change,” promotes Kerstin Hochmüller.
