Solar Powered Solutions for Disasters

This year's DLR Design Challenge offered students a platform to present their innovative ideas in aviation. Among the impressive contributions, “HEIKE” from RWTH Aachen particularly stood out. The challenge was to design an aircraft that would restore internet service after disasters while also enabling Earth observation.

HEIKE, a “high-flying, efficient and intelligent crisis communications unit,” is a next-generation solar aircraft. The design with canard configuration and inverted V-tail makes it not only a masterpiece of engineering, but also a promising instrument in crisis situations.

The event, now in its seventh year, shows that the youngest generation of aerospace students is ready to tackle the challenges of our time with creativity and technical know-how.
