Automation leads to sustainable ferry navigation

The autoFerry research project marks a turning point for the maritime industry by opening the door to safer and more efficient ferry operations through advanced automation technologies. With significant funding from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection, autoFerry is setting new standards in terms of safety and environmental protection in the shipping industry. By focusing on automating the entire ferry operation, from departure to arrival, and demonstrating these technologies on the Wittow car ferry, the project addresses essential challenges such as the shortage of skilled workers and increasing environmental protection requirements. The integration of model predictive control (MPC) for precise navigation in narrow waters and the cooperation between leading research institutions and companies underscores the ambition to revolutionize maritime transport automation. This ambitious undertaking promises to significantly improve efficiency and safety in ferry operations and thus sets a new milestone in maritime innovation.
