BMBF promotes quantum technologies and photonics in order to shape the future in a self-determined manner.

Quantum technologies and photonics (“the study of light particles”) are the key to quantum systems. These deal with, among other things, the areas of quantum computing, communication, sensors, measurement technology, materials and simulation.

Until the beginning of 2022, the two future fields were supported by the BMBF program “Photonics Research Germany” and the federal government’s program “Quantum technologies – from the basics to the market”. With the research program “Quantum Systems – Developing Cutting-Edge Technology” published by the BMBF.  Shaping the future.” Both key technologies are to be promoted together in the future. The program forms the strategic framework for the BMBF's research funding of quantum systems for the next ten years.

The mission of the program is clearly defined:

“Germany and Europe are expected to become world leaders in quantum computing and quantum sensing over the next ten years.”

The BMBF therefore wants to expand Germany's competitiveness in quantum systems and at the same time secure the technological sovereignty of Germany and Europe through cutting-edge technologies from Germany.

The research program itself is divided into three fields of action, which ensure a clear direction.

Field of action I: Pushing technological boundaries – researching and further developing quantum systems

In order to be able to use the diverse possibilities of quantum systems for business and society, numerous scientific and technological challenges must be mastered. It is important to master the important basic technologies as well as to create new opportunities for the economic realization of practical quantum systems.

Field of action II: Putting quantum systems into use – driving forward solutions for the economy and society

Research into quantum systems opens up completely new perspectives for solving economic and social challenges. The spectrum ranges from more powerful components for the connected world to innovative tools for production or the fight against diseases through to solutions for sustainable energy production, sustainable use of resources and climate protection.

Field of action III: Designing ecosystems – creating new innovation chains, attracting the best minds, taking people with you

The potential of quantum systems arises from the transfer of fundamental quantum physics into new industrial or social applications. To achieve this, numerous research fields such as physics, mathematics, computer science, chemistry, medicine and engineering must work together. Companies must also network with universities and research institutions.
