The BioRegions Innovation Prize was once again awarded at the annual German Biotechnology Days 2023 (DBT) in Wiesbaden . The prize recognizes innovative patents in modern biotechnology and life science research, including medical technology, and is awarded by the Working Group of BioRegions in Germany. For 16 years, the prize has successfully supported scientists in making their patented ideas visible, transforming them into marketable products, and establishing their own companies.
This year, an innovator from North Rhine-Westphalia is among the winners: The BioThrust , led by Dr. Patrick Bongartz from RWTH Aachen University, was awarded for its project "Integrated Gassing and Stirring Unit for Bioreactors." The patent describes the invention of a membrane stirrer that, for the first time worldwide, makes it possible to supply organisms and cell cultures in a bioreactor with sufficient gas without bubble formation. The jury justified its decision with the associated significant increase in process yield, which offers particular potential for pharmaceutical production.
