Architecting Edges – System architecture of edge applications

Software and system architects have been working on the structured technical conception of applications for many years. The emergence of new technologies always leads to new structures, which at the same time require a different approach to developing software. The introduction and expansion of the new 5G mobile communications standard as well as the possibility of making applications available on site near the end devices using edge computing is an example of this. Edge Analytics – Use of artificial intelligence in edge applications

Machine learning methods are on everyone's lips and have been used in many productive applications for several years. The collection, processing and evaluation of large amounts of data are the basic requirements for the successful implementation of these procedures. Due to the high data rates and low latency, the 5G mobile communications standard is the perfect communication technology for transmitting this data across many devices. The use of artificial intelligence and 5G in combination with the on-site collection and processing of these amounts of data using edge computing will drive the development of new types of applications and business processes in the future.

Discuss whether these technologies can really make processes “more intelligent” and what challenges and potential these technologies bring with them in the “ Edge Analytics ” focus group.

Edge Security – Security in Edge Computing

IT security, including its three primary protection goals – confidentiality, availability and integrity – has always played a central role in the development of IT systems. However, with the introduction of new technologies come new challenges and risks related to security requirements. In addition to the many advantages and new applications that the 5G mobile communications standard and edge computing bring with them, both the infrastructure and the data collected must be protected against attacks and failures at all times.

The “ Edge Security ” focus group will discuss how IT security in the edge can be further advanced.

Clouds beyond the Edge – Hybrid 5G applications with edge and cloud computing

The new 5G mobile communications standard in combination with edge computing can, for the first time, guarantee various quality of service properties in a mobile network, such as very low latency or extremely high data throughput. However, the amount of IT resources available in the edge is very limited compared to the cloud. For this reason, novel concepts are required to implement 5G applications so that the advantages of both technologies can be used in the best possible way.

In the “ Clouds beyond the Edge ” focus group, the following questions will be openly discussed and solutions developed:

  • Which application components can be deployed in the edge and which in the cloud?
  • How do I deal with the mobility of the end devices?
  • What does the concept of a hybrid 5G application actually look like?

Project participants from the 5G.NRW funding competition as well as interested parties can regularly exchange ideas and network with each other on the topic of edge computing in the focus groups.

The aim is to stimulate an open exchange about the challenges, possibilities and limits of edge computing and to develop joint solutions.
