Research into sustainable production methods for butadiene

Butadiene, a key monomer in polymer manufacturing and car tire production, is currently derived primarily from petroleum. In their Power2C4 project, the Fraunhofer UMSICHT team is looking for more sustainable alternatives that reduce environmental impact and reduce the CO2 footprint.

The researchers focused on a catalytic process that uses renewable electricity to convert ethanol to butadiene. Using a novel method, a catalyst system based on a synthetic saponite was identified and synthesized. This innovative approach has the potential to drive the transition to more environmentally friendly production of butadiene.
