Rheinische Revier is intended to become Europe's leading location for research, development and innovation to establish metal-focused circuits for e-cars

The Research Training Group (GRK) Circular E-Cars aims to improve the recycling of electric vehicles as they contain more valuable materials compared to conventional cars. Supported by various chairs and institutions at RWTH Aachen, the University of Siegen, the FH Münster and other partners, the Rheinisches Revier is to be developed into a leading location for research and innovation in the circular economy of e-cars. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research is funding the project with 8.4 million euros.

The focus is on resource-efficient, (partially) automated dismantling processes that are supported by augmented reality and AI. These are intended to strengthen the value chain in the automotive sector. Innovative, circular value chains of e-cars are being researched in 22 doctoral projects, with knowledge transfer being ensured by the trained doctoral students.
In addition to technical aspects, the GRK also examines business models and labor market skills, especially for small and medium-sized companies in the Rhenish region. By integrating regional transformation platforms and initiatives such as REVIERa and IN4climate.RR, an innovation ecosystem is to be created that will create at least 7,000 jobs in the long term and increase the future viability of the region.
