NRW.innovativ visits the “Summit for Research and Innovation 2024” at the Hannover Messe

The 10th Summit for Research and Innovation took place for the first time on April 22, 2024 as part of the Hannover Messe, also as a symbol of the strengthening of the link between business and research. In addition to high-ranking guests from politics including Chancellor Scholz, Prime Minister Weil and Research Minister Stark-Watzinger, a large number of actors from science and practice came together to reflect on the opportunities, challenges and policy implications of the artificial intelligence megatrend. The basic tenet was that Germany is excellently positioned in terms of human capital, medium-sized businesses and basic research, but that this potential is not (yet) reflected in the application or value creation.

Type of event: face-to-face event

Date: April 22, 2024

Organizer: Stifterverband

What implications does it have for NRW?

  • The research landscape in Germany is well positioned, especially when it comes to training highly qualified specialist staff, but they cannot be retained at the location, even though the institutional framework conditions are very good.
  • Research Data Act, Growth Opportunities Act (Federal Government) and AI Act (EU) are intended to open up new opportunities for research and implementation in the context of artificial intelligence, also in states such as North Rhine-Westphalia.
  • Risk financing in Germany can still be expanded and private capital in particular is often missing for the growth phase of young companies. This also requires risky allocation of funds.
  • It is also advisable to bring funding into the area, but also to create research and user-strong locations where AI ecosystems can establish themselves. NRW can benefit here with its numerous research and university locations.
