The KI.NRW competence platform is expanding North Rhine-Westphalia into a top nationwide region for applied artificial intelligence (AI) and establishing NRW in international networks. As the state umbrella organization for AI, KI.NRW combines the triad of cutting-edge research, innovation and entrepreneurship. KI.NRW's offerings are primarily aimed at accelerating the transfer of artificial intelligence from research to business, building a leading region for professional qualifications in AI and providing impetus for social dialogue around trustworthy, human-centered AI. KI.NRW is funded by the state ministries MWIKE and MKW and managed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems IAIS in Sankt Augustin.

KI.NRW's portfolio includes various event formats such as the annual KI.Forum.NRW and KI.Sprechstunde as well as design sprints and shadowings for companies in the future. Demonstrators and a virtual AI.Showroom , educational offerings such as the KI.Worlds , diverse publications and the KI.Landkarte, , make the competencies of artificial intelligence available in the areas of research, business and transfer. In addition, the competence platform supports projects funded by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia as AI lighthouse projects with the aim of supporting efficient technology transfer and close cooperation between medium-sized companies, start-ups, universities, colleges and research institutions in North Rhine-Westphalia. These include, for example, the two KI.NRW flagship projects “AI Certification” and “SmartHospital.NRW”.

Dr. Christian Temath

Dr. Christian Temath, Managing Director of the KI.NRW competence platform since September 2020, is working with his team at the Fraunhofer IAIS in Sankt Augustin to establish the “AI made in NRW” brand and strengthen the technological sovereignty of the state of NRW. The managing director and his team combine their specialist knowledge and many years of experience in the areas of artificial intelligence, digitalization, consulting and networking. The goal is to make it easier for small and medium-sized companies and start-ups in particular to get started with AI and to provide information about best practice examples and trends.
