Drones in use: Technology enables a new dimension in rescue operations

The “ GrenzFlug+ ” project sets new standards in the search for missing people. With the help of drones and 5G technology, searches should be made faster and more efficient. This innovation was recently successfully demonstrated at the border triangle of Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany.

The search for missing people in impassable terrain often presents rescue workers with major challenges. With the “ GrenzFlug+ ” project, drones can take on this task and make the search much easier. The project is carried out by the Institute for Flight System Dynamics at RWTH Aachen University under the direction of Professor Dieter Moormann. Tema AG, Vodafone AG, Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH, the fire department of the Aachen city region and the city of Aachen are also involved.

Use of drones to search for people

The drones are equipped with 5G technology and can therefore transmit data to rescue workers in real time. An immediate reaction is made possible by transmitting the data via virtual reality. This technology is invaluable, particularly in difficult terrain such as low mountain ranges. The rapid location and rescue of people in distress can be significantly improved through the use of drones.

Support program and demonstration

The “ GrenzFlug+ ” project is funded by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV). The recent demonstration at the tri-border point showed the effectiveness of drone technology. Two drones took off synchronously and coordinated their search for a missing person. Oliver Krischer, Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Transport of North Rhine-Westphalia, initiated the mission with a mouse click. A milestone of the project is the safe integration of the drones into the common airspace in accordance with the new EU regulations. These now allow cross-border flights of unmanned aircraft beyond visual range. The collaboration between Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands shows how drone technology can save lives in practice.
