5th NRW.innovative future workshop

System innovations in freight transport logistics: Current trends and implications for modern innovation policy

As the most populous and traffic-rich federal state with a dynamic economy, North Rhine-Westphalia faces major challenges in dealing with future freight traffic and transport volumes. This presents great opportunities for NRW as an important logistics location with diverse expertise in researching, testing and applying new logistics concepts. System innovations will play a central role here. North Rhine-Westphalia has recognized the importance of networked system innovations in logistics and has anchored the topic as an important field of innovation in the Regional Innovation Strategy (RIS). Now it is important to implement the key points and measures formulated therein in order to further develop the framework conditions for the logistics location and cross-modal innovations in the freight transport and logistics industry.

Against this background, the future workshop on the topic of “System innovations in freight transport logistics” took place.

In this context, different facets of the implementation of system innovations in freight transport logistics were discussed as a central pillar of decarbonization and for achieving the sustainability goals in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Keynote speeches were given by Dr. Jonathan Köhler from Fraunhofer ISI on the topic “Twin Transitions in Transport Logistics: Decarbonization and digitalization as drivers for system transformation” and by Peter Abelmann from Logistik:NRW on the topic “Freight Transport Logistics: Practical Challenges for the Industry”.

Below you will find the documentation of the discussion as part of the future workshop linked.
