North Rhine-Westphalia shapes the future: OECD Forum Highlights

The world faces a dual challenge: the need to be both environmentally friendly and digitally advanced. The OECD Green Growth and Sustainable Development Forum, recently held in Paris, provided a unique platform to explore these issues. Experts from around the world, including representatives from North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), engaged in intensive discussions about how this so-called "twin transition" can succeed.

The conference, which took place on November 21 and 22, attracted 200 participants and served as a melting pot for ideas and strategies. A central focus was how to maximize the synergies between green and digital transformation to promote a more sustainable and equitable society.

These discussions are particularly important for North Rhine-Westphalia. Located in the heart of Europe and boasting a strong industrial base, the region is facing significant changes in the demand for skilled workers. Digital technologies offer new opportunities for participatory approaches and innovative business models that are both environmentally friendly and efficient.

However, there are also challenges. The growing carbon footprint of digital technologies, electronic waste, and geopolitical tensions present obstacles that must be overcome. Conference participants discussed various approaches to addressing these challenges while simultaneously harnessing the potential of digital transformation.

The OECD forum has shown that the path to a green and digital future is complex, but achievable. North Rhine-Westphalia has the opportunity to be at the forefront of this movement and to set an exemplary precedent towards a sustainable future.
