Since 1990, the Marantec Group, based in Marienfeld, has been developing and producing drive and control systems for gates. To manage the transformation, the company aims to evolve from a "hidden champion" to an "open champion" and develop innovations together with other companies and organizations.
German SMEs are considered a global role model. In North Rhine-Westphalia, too, many medium-sized companies shape the economic landscape, among them numerous so-called "hidden champions"—companies that are world market leaders in their segment but remain relatively unknown and are often located outside major metropolitan areas. The Marantec Group, headquartered in Marienfeld, East Westphalia, also considers itself a "hidden champion." With around 600 employees at eight production sites and eight sales offices worldwide, the group operates in more than 70 countries. It specializes in drive and control systems. Business is booming, but at the same time, the challenges are immense. Global competition, digitalization, and the imperative of sustainability, in particular, are creating immense pressure for change. "We are convinced that we can no longer solve the challenges we face alone as a single medium-sized company," says Kerstin Hochmüller, CEO of Marantec. Compared to corporations and entire economic systems from Asia and the USA, Marantec, as a medium-sized company, lacks both the necessary skills and resources to implement innovative ideas, as well as the financial means required.
“Our future lies in cooperating with other companies, organizations, and people.”
“Therefore, we need to network,” Hochmüller and her co-CEO Andreas Schiemann declare, outlining their approach. “Our future lies in collaborating with other companies, organizations, and individuals.” Based on this conviction, the company has set itself no less a goal than transforming into an “Open Champion.” This includes, for example, leveraging existing innovations for its own use, rather than reinventing them. It also means strengthening its own production facilities by manufacturing components that are also of interest to other companies and industries. Furthermore, Marantec aims to learn from others and simultaneously empower them, so that together they can offer customers greater value. And: “We want to offer our technical solutions and ideas to others,” Hochmüller emphasizes. The group has even developed a symbol and a methodology for this transformation: the buzzword is “Open Champion.” “In many areas, this represents a radical departure from established structures and hierarchies,” the CEO explains. This also applies to corporate management. “Everyone is important and, at the same time, a part of the whole,” she asserts. To ensure everyone at Marantec can do their job well, the company provides the right equipment, processes, and coordination. This also involves a willingness to constantly question current practices, to determine if they are still effective, or if alternative solutions exist. "This brings us to the fundamental commitment to change and self-directed action," says Hochmüller. When all these elements mesh together, the company becomes much faster, more agile, and more innovative. It also enables it to tackle large and comprehensive tasks such as implementing a circular economy. "This is one of our most important goals," the managing director announces, "but achieving it also requires strong and willing partners."
Regarding partnerships and collaborations, North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) is an excellent location for the Marantec Group. "Networks are incredibly important for our path," emphasizes Hochmüller, "and here in NRW, and especially in East Westphalia, we have an extremely strong network." Marantec maintains close ties with, for example, the Bielefeld campus of the University of Applied Sciences for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (FHM) and Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences, as well as, further west, with RWTH Aachen University. Marantec also cultivates close relationships within the "owl maschinenbau" network, which pools diverse expertise and promotes its collective innovative strength. The medium-sized group also collaborates with the Founders Foundation in Bielefeld, which trains aspiring entrepreneurs. And last but not least, with its "Open Champion" initiative, Marantec itself offers a network and invites collaboration within the East Westphalia-Lippe region and beyond. "To give more momentum to change," Kerstin Hochmüller adds.
