GEMESYS GmbH – Making Artificial Intelligence More Efficient
The challenge
Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to positively influence people's quality of life in many areas. However, in order for AI to have any effect , it must first be trained.
The hardware largely used today is not specifically designed for this task. This is where the innovation from GEMESYS GmbH in Bochum, founded by Dr.-Ing. Dennis Michaelis, Dr.-Ing. Enver Solan, Daniel Krüger, and Moritz Schmidt, comes in: a chip that functions like the human brainto overcome data processing bottlenecks and provide AI with the hardware it needs to fulfill its purpose.

The innovation
While working at the Chair of Digital Communication Systems at Ruhr University Bochum – where they shared the same doctoral supervisor – Michaelis and Solan began developing initial approaches in 2015 for a chip whose operation is significantly closer to that of the human brain than any previous hardware and is based on its information processing mechanism. In 2023, they founded GEMESYS GmbH, together with Krüger and Schmidt, to further develop the chip. They anticipate being able to increase the efficiency of AI ten thousandfold compared to the current state of the art . The chip will be equipped with so-called memristors to achieve this .
These are specialized hardware components that have only been manufactured for a few years. Manufacturing these components and integrating them onto chips currently presents a significant technical challenge. The innovative technology developed by GEMESYS addresses some of these difficulties and promises the scalable use of memristors . The four founders' vision is to establish North Rhine-Westphalia as a major hub for AI hardware, extending beyond the borders of the state and Germany . They have now completed a demonstrator , allowing them to practically apply their theoretical foundations for the first time. A prototype will follow. The first pilot project with an industry partner is scheduled to launch in 2025, and GEMESYS plans to enter the market in 2028 .
The NRW effect
“The timeline shows that developing this chip is an extremely complex process ,” emphasizes Michaelis. Therefore, he and his team, which now consists of ten people, are very grateful for the funding from the “EXIST Research Transfer” program of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action. However, knowledge is just as important as money . “Bochum and North Rhine-Westphalia are strategically the perfect location for us,” explains Michaelis.
The startup values its proximity to excellent research for two reasons: for recruitment and for future research collaborations. "The local universities produce fantastic talent that we will soon urgently need," says Michaelis. Furthermore, GEMESYS has already benefited from two awards in North Rhine-Westphalia : It won first place in the KUER.NRW Business Plan Competition 2022. And Michaelis was nominated for the "innovation4transformation" audience award at the 2023 North Rhine-Westphalia Innovation Prize . In a live vote, the Bochum-based innovator received the second-highest number of votes .
