The “Center for Innovation with Nature” will create a pioneering place for research, transfer and participation – a flagship project for climate resilience and sustainable development in North Rhine-Westphalia
Cologne University of Applied Sciences (TH Köln) is planning a real-world laboratory for climate research in the Rhenish mining region with its "Center for Innovation with Nature" (CEIN). The aim is to develop innovative solutions for sustainable resource use, greater climate resilience, and energy independence in the region. The project was presented at a press conference with North Rhine-Westphalia's Minister of Science, Ina Brandes, representatives of the university, and local stakeholders.
CEIN is intended to be not only a center for scientific research, but also a platform for knowledge transfer into practice. A particular focus is on spin-offs and the promotion of start-ups through entrepreneurial training for students. TH Cologne is integrating its study programs and professorships into the project from an early stage.
Another key focus is on public participation: Citizen science projects will actively involve schoolchildren and interested citizens in the research. Construction in Erftstadt-Liblar is scheduled to begin in 2026.
The building itself is designed as a demonstration project for climate-positive construction methods – utilizing renewable energies and featuring test areas for renaturation measures. CEIN aims to raise the international profile of the Rhenish mining region as a European model region for energy and resource security.
The project is financed 90% by federal funds for structural strengthening and 10% by state funds. The state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) will provide approximately €17 million by 2029. The participating stakeholders see CEIN as a milestone for structural change and an opportunity for holistic future strategies in NRW.
