A research team from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) has demonstrated in a study how people can receive better care after a kidney transplant . Their findings are intended to help reduce the risk of potentially fatal kidney failure after transplantation.
The study was initiated by Prof. Dr. Lars Pape from the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) and Prof. Dr. Mario Schiffer from the University Hospital Erlangen. It was funded by the Innovation Fund of the Federal Joint Committee (G-BA) with €5.4 million and conducted at several German kidney transplant centers.
The study teams were also able to demonstrate that the improved follow-up care of transplant recipients enrolled in the Kidney Transplant 360-Degree Program 12 months or later after surgery has a significant effect. To further refine the results, the next step involves examining the biomarkers of study participants. This project is part of the large-scale IMMEDIATE, which is being conducted by 12 scientific institutions in the European Union (EU), the United Kingdom, and Israel. The EU is providing €6.2 million in funding until 2026.
