Future Initiative NRW combines climate protection and modernization

With its "Future Initiative NRW," the state government is pooling investments of around two billion euros for climate protection, climate adaptation, and the modernization of the state. The measures are intended to make North Rhine-Westphalia more resilient to heat, heavy rain, drought, and low water levels, reduce CO₂ emissions, and simultaneously provide new impetus for innovation and value creation.

A key focus is the modernization of public buildings. An investment initiative totaling one billion euros is planned for the renovation of state-owned properties. A further 380 million euros from the North Rhine-Westphalia plan will be invested in construction projects at universities and research institutions. This aims to create high-performance infrastructure for research, teaching, and studies, while simultaneously improving the buildings' carbon footprint.

Strengthening leading green markets is also crucial for innovation. Recycled materials and sustainable building materials should be given greater consideration in public construction projects in the future. Pilot projects using green steel and the use of lower-CO₂ cements can create additional demand for climate-friendly solutions. Furthermore, investments in rail sidings, port railways, and other rail infrastructure should support lower-emission and more competitive logistics.
