Promoting global cooperation and technological progress
In a major step towards promoting 6G research in Europe, the Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) has published its third Research and Innovation (R&I) work program for 2024. With a remarkable €129 million in funding, this program aims to accelerate the development of 6G systems and lay the foundation for future standardization activities.
The 2024 R&D work program focuses on bringing together industry leaders, academia, research institutions, SMEs, and innovators to develop 6G technologies and establish international standards. It emphasizes three key areas: promoting projects with a higher Technology Readiness Level (TRL), integrating microelectronics into 6G infrastructures, and fostering international collaboration.
The importance of global partnerships is underscored by planned collaborations with countries such as the Republic of Korea and Japan, aimed at strengthening the worldwide impact of research. Particular emphasis is placed on the sustainable design of 6G infrastructures and the promotion of innovation in microelectronics, with artificial intelligence playing a key role.
In North Rhine-Westphalia, this program offers an opportunity to position oneself at the forefront of 6G research and innovation and to strengthen the region's innovation ecosystem. The third call for proposals will open in January 2024, but interested parties can begin preparations now.
