A pioneering project by the BMDV and the BNetzA to improve the availability of property data and accelerate the expansion of fiber optic and mobile communications networks.

The Federal Ministry for Digital Affairs and Transport (BMDV) and the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) have launched a pioneering pilot project for the digitalization of public properties in North Rhine-Westphalia. The project aims to improve the availability of property data for telecommunications companies and thus accelerate the expansion of digital infrastructures, including fiber optics and mobile communications.

Background and Objectives

The digitization of public properties is a crucial step in creating the conditions for the nationwide expansion of fiber optic and mobile networks. By providing detailed property data, telecommunications companies can plan more efficiently and access suitable locations more quickly. This is particularly important for improving network coverage in urban and rural areas and reducing the digital divide.

Project implementation

As part of the pilot project, selected public properties in North Rhine-Westphalia will initially be digitally recorded and the corresponding data stored in a central database. This database will be made available to telecommunications companies to facilitate the planning and expansion of their networks. The project is being supported by an interdisciplinary team of experts from the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) and the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA), as well as other partners from academia and industry.

Expected benefits

Digitizing public properties offers numerous advantages. Firstly, it significantly simplifies access to crucial location information for network expansion. Secondly, the central database eliminates duplication of effort and increases the efficiency of planning processes. In the long term, the project contributes to strengthening the digital infrastructure in North Rhine-Westphalia and enhancing the region's competitiveness.
