Networking and innovation for progress
The future workshop, organized by NRW.innovativ and held on December 7, 2023, offered in-depth insights into the applications of AI in North Rhine-Westphalia's healthcare system. The focus was on the potential, opportunities, and risks of AI in innovative medicine and care.
Challenges and Opportunities in North Rhine-Westphalia:
A central theme of the workshop was the heterogeneous data landscape in North Rhine-Westphalia. Despite some data islands and leading projects that are well-linked according to common standards, the challenge lies in the seamless linking and compatibility of data according to international standards. This underscores the need for increased exchange and networking to advance AI development.
The Role of Patients and Ethics:
The discussions also emphasized the importance of patient participation in healthcare. It was highlighted that physicians often have limited knowledge about their patients and that the use of unstructured data presents a challenge. Uniform standards and interoperability are therefore crucial for improving the quality of health data.
Future Perspectives and Strategies:
The concluding discussions clearly demonstrated that North Rhine-Westphalia, through its diversity and strong cooperation between various stakeholders, can assume a pioneering role in AI-based healthcare. With nine university medical centers and numerous research institutions, the region offers many opportunities for clinical trials and empirical evidence.
