Forum for Social Innovations and Public Benefit Enterprises: Progress and Perspectives
On April 8, 2025, the Forum for Social Innovations and Public Benefit Enterprises (SIGU) took place in Berlin with over 800 participants from academia, business, politics, and society. Organized by the Federal Ministry for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology (BMK) and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the SIGU Forum presented the implementation status of the National Strategy for Social Innovations and Public Benefit Enterprises after 1.5 years. In addition to presentations, the forum offered diverse opportunities to discuss ideas, current topics, best practices, challenges, and options for action in participatory formats – “Stories of New Beginnings & Success” and “Workshops for Change.”.
What does this mean for North Rhine-Westphalia?
- Findings: Social innovations are not inferior to technological innovations, but often drive them. Furthermore, they contribute to reducing public costs, creating jobs, opening up new markets, and achieving social impact
- The monitoring report presented at the forum shows that almost 80% of the planned measures have been implemented, primarily within the framework of "Micro-Mezzanine Fund Germany III", "Innovation Program for Business Models and Pioneering Solutions" and "Having a Sustainable Impact – Promoting Public Benefit-Oriented Companies"
- The SIGU ecosystem offers a nationwide overview of contact points, stakeholders, and financing and funding opportunities
- SIGU activities are already enshrined in the coalition agreement in North Rhine-Westphalia and are promoted through numerous measures, including the creation of a central contact point for impact-oriented start-ups from summer 2025
