HAW-OpenSpace aims to create open innovation spaces.
HAW -OpenSpace is a new funding program from the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space that supports the targeted development of research infrastructures at universities of applied sciences . The aim is to strengthen application-oriented research and to expand long-term, usable structures for innovation, knowledge transfer, and scaling.
The funding supports the development of open innovation spaces that enable inter- and transdisciplinary research into future technologies. The focus is on projects that combine scientific excellence with practical applicability and contribute to resilience, sustainability, and technological sovereignty. This infrastructure funding is complemented by an associated research project that supports the testing and scalable application of the developed technologies.
Furthermore, HAW-OpenSpace aims to open up new research fields, strategically develop existing topics, and strengthen knowledge and technology transfer to business and society. The development of interdisciplinary research communities along the entire innovation chain, as well as measures for scientific qualification and broad use of the infrastructure, are also part of the funding approach.
State-run and state-recognized universities of applied sciences in Germany that are predominantly state-funded are eligible to apply. Funding is provided for a period of 36 months . The application deadline is August 3, 2026.
