Cost-effective, mobile MRI scanners

 

Scientists at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences are working on a revolutionary medical device: a mobile, cost-effective magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner called Low-Field-MRI. This project brings medicine and technology back to the roots of MRI. One difference, however, is that it utilizes the advantages of modern signal processing technologies to enable more accurate and efficient diagnoses.

Low-field MRI scanners are smaller, lighter, and cost only a fraction of conventional MRI machines. Furthermore, weighing only 200 kilograms, they are easily transportable, making them suitable for use in areas where large MRI scanners are not economical.

The European Union is supporting the "A4IM" project with total funding of approximately €2.5 million. Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts is collaborating in a consortium with numerous other European universities and research institutions, taking the lead in the development of control elements and the necessary programming.
