With the new hub at the DLR site in Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia is sending a strong signal
With the groundbreaking ceremony for the GOVSATCOM hub at the DLR site in Cologne, a significant infrastructure project for secure satellite communication in Europe has been launched. This will create a central European hub in North Rhine-Westphalia, intended to step in during crisis situations when terrestrial communication networks fail or are disrupted.
The hub is part of European efforts to build a sovereign and resilient communications infrastructure that functions independently of external providers. The federal and state governments are jointly funding the project, with North Rhine-Westphalia contributing an investment of up to €50 million. In the future, the site is also planned to be expanded to include quantum communication technologies.
The GOVSATCOM hub aims to provide government agencies and emergency services with reliable satellite-based communication, even in exceptional circumstances. This can be crucial during natural disasters, cyberattacks, or security crises when traditional communication channels are no longer available. The hub is intended to make a significant contribution to Europe's operational capability and resilience in times of crisis.
For North Rhine-Westphalia, the project also sends a strong signal about its location. With the German Aerospace Center (DLR), the European Space Agency's (ESA) European Astronaut Centre, the LUNA lunar simulation facility, and the ENVIHAB research center, the state already boasts outstanding space infrastructure. The GOVSATCOM hub complements these strengths and underscores North Rhine-Westphalia's role as a leading European space location with a virtually complete value chain.
Furthermore, the project aims to further promote innovation, collaboration, and growth in Cologne. Working closely with science, industry, and politics, North Rhine-Westphalia intends to strategically strengthen the development of pioneering technologies in areas such as aerospace, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and quantum technologies – thereby making a concrete contribution to Europe's technological sovereignty.
