What's in it for North Rhine-Westphalia?
- Cohesion policy is the central regional development instrument of the European Union, which will continue to play a prominent role in reducing spatial disparities.
- In terms of its design, it is expected that this will continue to be largely in the hands of the regions ("local specificity"), which will give them better opportunities to control and target the green, digital and social transformation.
- The EU is striving – assuming responsible handling in the past – to reduce bureaucracy in the approval and allocation of funding, which will open up opportunities for NRW to implement infrastructure and funding measures more quickly.
- Regions, especially those like North Rhine-Westphalia, which have many key industries and strong research and innovation capacities, are encouraged to use cohesion funds to be better prepared for future emergencies (resilience).
