Research team at the University of Cologne discovers innovative antibody 04_A06 – a beacon of hope for HIV prevention and therapy worldwide

An international research team led by the University of Cologne has identified a groundbreaking antibody called 04_A06, which neutralized 98.5% of all tested HIV strains in laboratory tests. The antibody even overcomes classic resistance mechanisms that often render previous therapies ineffective. In experiments with humanized mice, 04_A06 permanently reduced the viral load to undetectable levels – an effect that other antibodies have not yet been able to achieve.

The discovery is based on the analysis of blood samples from so-called "elite neutralizers," whose immune systems are particularly effective at fighting HIV. From over 800 antibodies tested, 04_A06 stood out due to its exceptional structure: an extended amino acid chain allows it access to hard-to-reach, conserved viral regions – a potential key to overcoming escape mutations.

Computer models predict a protective effect of over 93% with a single dose. The antibody has been exclusively licensed to Vir Biotechnology and could be used in the future both for the treatment of HIV-infected individuals and for prevention in at-risk groups.

The next step is clinical trials to pave the way for patient care.
