The future of digitalization in Europe: An investment in knowledge and technology
The European Commission has laid the groundwork for a digitalized Europe by investing over €176 million in developing digital skills and technologies. At the heart of this initiative is the Digital Europe Programme, which focuses on critical areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), data governance, cloud infrastructure, digital public services, and digital skills. With the aim of leading Europe into the digital decade, this programme marks a significant step towards realizing a digitally connected society and economy.
- Particular emphasis is placed on promoting AI technology, with a budget of €67.5 million to accelerate its adoption and support compliance with AI legislation. This includes, among other things, an EU AI innovation accelerator and the coordination of AI regulatory sandboxes at EU level.
- Furthermore, the program invests €74 million in the establishment and development of common European data spaces across various sectors. These investments underscore the European Commission's commitment to developing and capitalizing on the data market.
- In the cloud-to-edge infrastructure, €30 million will be invested in a pilot project designed to demonstrate the advantages of telco edge technology in various sectors. The aim is to promote interoperable and climate-neutral data processing across the EU.
- In the area of digital skills , €4 million is earmarked to train adults in basic digital skills and to increase the participation of girls and women in the digital world.
- Finally, a project to promote innovative and networked public administrations will be supported with a budget of €1 million , aiming to facilitate the development of interoperability solutions for access to digital public services across EU borders.
