Significant CO2 reduction in the recycling process

The Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety, and Energy Technology (UMSICHT) has conducted a comparative life cycle assessment (LCA) on the topic of used tire recycling for Pyrum Innovations. The result is a milestone for the circular economy, particularly in used tire recycling, where approximately 1.5 billion used tires are generated worldwide each year.

The study highlights that Pyrum Innovations' special pyrolysis process not only achieves significant CO2 savings compared to conventional thermal disposal methods, but also recovers important raw materials such as carbon black. This process not only contributes to the conservation of fossil resources, but also opens up new possibilities for tire production.

The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) conducted by Fraunhofer UMSICHT compares Pyrum's pyrolysis process with various conventional disposal methods in Germany. The results show that, in addition to alternative material recycling, the pyrolysis process offers particular advantages in the areas of climate protection and resource conservation. Specifically, the pyrolysis process results in a net CO2 saving of 703 kg CO2 equivalent per ton of used tires.

Furthermore, the pyrolysis process not only recovers carbon black substitute and pyrolysis oil, but also metals. BASF then processes the pyrolysis oil into chemicals. This process represents a significant innovation in end-of-life tire recycling and opens up new avenues for a more effective and environmentally friendly circular economy.
