North Rhine-Westphalia invests in battery research

The newly opened Battery Cell Research Production Facility (FFB PreFab) in Münster marks a significant advancement in the development and production of battery cells in North Rhine-Westphalia and sets new standards in German and European battery technology. With a substantial investment of over €300 million provided by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and additional federal funding of up to €500 million, the project demonstrates strong commitment at both the state and federal levels.

Innovation through cooperation – The FFB PreFab acts as a bridge between scientific research and industrial application by providing a 6,800 square meter research area where battery cells can not only be developed but also tested on an industrial scale. This facility is part of a larger strategic plan aimed at strengthening North Rhine-Westphalia as a center of science and industry and expanding its leading role in high-tech research.

Future-oriented research projects – The FFB PreFab is just the beginning of a long-term vision that will be continued with the construction of the even larger FFB Fab. This expansion will significantly increase research and production capacities and lay the foundation for gigawatt-scale battery cell production. The projects are designed to secure Germany's technological sovereignty in key industries and to actively shape the energy and transport transition.

The commitment and vision of those involved the importance of close cooperation between the various levels of government, academia, and industry cannot be overstated. These partnerships are crucial for the rapid implementation of ambitious goals and the successful realization of projects, as underscored by the swift completion of the FFB PreFab.
